North · Route 02 · 8 days
Where Mongolia turns to forest. The country's deepest lake, the southern fringe of the Siberian taiga, and the reindeer-herding Tsaatan who live deeper in the trees than the roads go.
The route
We fly north to Mörön and drive up to Khövsgöl — a lake so clear and deep it holds one percent of the world's fresh water, ringed by larch forest and grazing horses. Then we go further than the truck can, onto horses, toward the taiga where the Tsaatan keep their reindeer.
The reindeer visit depends on where the families have moved that season; we never promise a staged encounter. When it works, it is the quietest, strangest day of the whole calendar.
Day by day
Morning flight Ulaanbaatar → Mörön. We meet you and drive up to the southern shore of Khövsgöl, where the larch comes down to the water.
A slow day on the western shore — walking the forest edge, swimming if you can stand the cold, and watching the light change on the water all evening.
Meet the horses and the herders who'll ride with us. A first half-day ride along the shore to get used to a Mongolian saddle before the longer days.
Leave the truck and ride up into the taiga, following the herders' tracks to where the Tsaatan are camped this season. Night in a lavvu-style tent.
Time with a reindeer-herding family — their animals, their work, their world above the trees. We bring supplies, not a camera crew.
Retrace the ride to the lake and rejoin the truck. The body knows it's done something by now.
Drive back toward Mörön via a field of Bronze Age deer stones — carved monoliths older than the written history of the place.
Morning flight back to the capital. We drop you at your hotel or the airport.
